To make sure that your oriental rug stays beautiful and free of moths and other hidden dangers, follow these simple tips to make sure your rug doesn’t suffer any damages during its vacation.
Clean your rug
Rugs should never be stored dirty. Whatever is left on the rug can attract insects, vermin or simply deteriorate on its own destroying your rug. Best to have it washed before storing it away. Clean rugs based on manufacturer’s instructions.
Vacuum the rug on both sides before wet cleaning. This will remove dander, dust mites, etc. Use an appropriate setting on the vacuum so as to not damage it. If it cannot be vacuumed, at least beat the rug outdoors and leave it to air out in sunshine for a day before storing.
Check for moths before wrapping. Do not spray insecticide as these chemical may end up harming the rug. You can either professionally moth proof or use mothproof treatment that you’d use for fabrics. The value of the rug should be accounted for when deciding which method to prefer.
Roll the rug
Once you are sure that your rug is completely dry, roll it like a tube and wrap it in brown craft paper or canvas for storage. If you fold the rug, it can leave cracks and creases damaging the item. Don’t wrap the rug in plastic as that can create condensation resulting in mildew when there are temperature fluctuations whereas the paper breathes and allows moisture to escape. Also avoid using newspaper or any paper that has print on it as these materials are acidic and can cause damage.
Seal the wrapping with plenty of tape so that all seams are well covered and secure with a piece of rope. This acts as protection against moisture as well as moths. Ensure that they are evenly spaced through the length of the rug.
Store in proper storage area
Few of us have the luxury of a spare room to just store the rug, we simply have to make due with closets, cupboards, and under the beds. It is recommended that you store your rug elevated from the floor like on the shelf or table with layer of paper as a barrier in between so as not to let moisture seep in from the floor especially concrete floor. Look for a room that has a more stable environment. Try to avoid attics and basements where there is less climate control and suffer largest temperature fluctuations and relative humidity. The best location would be a room that is cool, dry and has curtains or blinds that can be used to control the amount of natural light.
Store the rug standing on end.
