Oriental Rugs – A Small Part Of Your Home But A Huge Part Of Someone’s Life
Oriental rugs have a different significance from today’s machine-tufted rugs.
What do you see in today’s usual rugs?
Nothing but just a machine-made product we use on our floor.
Those machine-made rugs with materials backing are cheap materials made up of with no hard work. They are cheap because they are made more quickly, more easily and are not good and strong as a handmade woven rug.
Now, look at oriental rugs. How much do you know about them? Where are they made? They are made somewhere at the other sides of our globe. Somewhere in eastern Asia – China, India, Nepal or some other oriental country!
Oriental rugs are hand-made. So what does it mean? When I compare an oriental rug with some other machine-made rugs, I see the extreme effort put into its making. An oriental rug may just be a part of your home, a small possession of yours, but someone on the other end of the world has put his/her months of hard work on it. Someone has spent his/her days weaving the rug of which you have no idea about. S/he has put his/her soul in it to give it a life; a story we are unknown about.
So when I see an oriental rug, it is not just the rug I see but all that struggle and effort someone has put into it somewhere you probably will never visit in your entire life.
But when a machine-tufted rug comes into the sight, I see nothing. Just a plain mat with no life!
Oriental rugs in Pittsburgh
Woven Rug Gallery has discovered some of the greatest rugs from the other corner of our world and amasses them in the heart of Pittsburgh at 1422 Potomac Avenue. It’s because Mr. Farhad Akar in 1996 discovered many people here value handmade rugs and the stories behind the creation of those masterpieces.
Time to spit out the truth
In this rug world, what I have realized is the interest people had in hand-woven rugs is slowly dying away. These cheaper, quicker and more attractively made machine-tufted rugs have attracted the people. However, there remains a small part of people who just enjoy handmade rugs. You must be one of them.
Maybe it is the time we should protect these antiques from the extinction. Invest a little in an oriental rug. It is made to last for your lifetime. It also exhibits the different taste that people of oriental countries have.
